Parrot Placement

Parrot Placement Program

After much soul searching and deliberation, the Board of Directors of the Long Island Parrot Society has made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend the Parrot Placement Program.  We cannot accept new applications or placement requests at this time.

We do not have enough qualified volunteers to perform the sensitive, challenging and frustrating tasks necessary to effect suitable placements for parrots needing new homes.  In many cases, we make phone calls that are not answered or returned, both by people wishing to adopt and those wanting to rehome their birds.  Virtual home visits have been increasingly problematic to arrange. We currently lack the time and resources to continue the program.

We are working to clear the backlog of adoption applications and rehoming requests. This will take some time, so if you have an active application or if your bird is listed for adoption, please be patient.  If you have already rehomed a bird in the program, please let us know by emailing info@liparrots.org.

We realize that emergencies may occur, such as the death or infirmity of a bird’s owner, requiring immediate action. We will do our best to refer people to qualified foster homes, boarding facilities or reputable shelters or sanctuaries. Please do not surrender your bird to any person or facility that you have not personally visited.

People often offer birds for private adoption. The Long Island Parrot Society is not a part of these offerings. It has come to our attention that some individuals have claimed to represent the Parrot Society when offering birds for adoption when they are not actually working on the organization’s behalf.

If you have questions about this, please email info@liparrots.org or call 631-957-1100.

The Final Decision on who adopts your bird is yours.

We are happy to assist you in this endeavor - however the ultimate responsibility for placing the bird is still yours. Please continue to look for a home yourself as well.
